Lifelong Learner

I’m thinking lately about taking a class.  I don’t know if I will.  But today I want to.  I hope to continue to learn throughout my life.  Here are a few I checked out on the JCCC website.  Maybe I’ll look into it for the spring.

Arts – Ceramics I

Spanish I

or a Humanities course called Civilzation

YouTube Monday

I almost forgot.  Here ya go.  This song has been in my head this week.  Not really a video but you can’t get the song anywhere.  White Stripes covering Dolly Pardon’s “Jolene.”

Hobby

Well, I’m bored.  I think that I’m in a very rare but interesting season of slowness.  I spent a lot of time at home this weekend.  Watched some movies, played the piano, read a little bit, etc.  But I’m still bored.  Maybe I should just ride it out without adding anything new (because I know this season won’t last too long), or maybe I should start a new hobby.  So here are a few I’m kicking around in my brain…

Skateboarding

Screen Printing

Macrame (once I figure out what it is)

Shooting Chipmunks with my BB gun

Biking

or my personal favorite – Getting a Dog.

YouTube Mondays

This begins my first re-occuring post, because…

On Mondays, I usually stroll in about 15 minutes late and then space-out for about an hour.  Sometimes this includes watching some YouTube clips.  Here is one that I’m fond of.  David Bazan of Pedro the Lion covering a Bob Dylan song.  Enjoy.

Lyrics

Occasionally I’ll be quietly singing a song to myself in the presence of other people when someone will stop me and correct my mistaken understanding of the lyrics.  Then they laugh at me.

Two examples of this were..

1.  In college I thought “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult was “Don’t Fear the Reverb”

2.  The other day I was singing the Doobie Brothers’ “Black Water” as “Roll Black Woman, Keep on Rollin”

Any one else have this problem?

Grand? Old Party

No matter what you think of these guys, this pic is BAD ASS!

I’ve actually been thinking quite a bit about politics lately.  Add that to the list (with the Olympics) of things that I didn’t think that I’d get sucked into.  I’ve watched more of the DNC and the RNC than any of my close friends.  However, we don’t have cable so we are spared the countless hours of commentary by the spin doctors from both sides.  We are just observing the conventions and making our own judgements (I think that’s better, but I’m not sure).  Jenny and I have been talking a lot about  what we’ve seen.  Here’s the deal… I grew up a Republican.  I was even quoted in our little middle school newspaper campaigning for Bob Dole when I was 14.  However, during the last 12 months I have begun to question some of my long held beliefs about policy and government.  There is just an increasingly bad taste in my mouth when I hear Republicans talk.  The war language even in unrelated issues is off-putting.  The over-the-top high regard of patriotism.  These are a few things that bother me.  This post is not about how much I love Barak and the Dems (I’m hesitant about them).  All I’m saying is that I’m slipping (or have already slipped) through the fingers of the GOP.  I hope I can write this without you landblasting me.  In the words of a close friend of mine “I’m just sayin'”.
